*If you comment on this post I'll choose seven interests from your profile, and you can explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post the answers in your own journal so others can play along.*

Long hair (on yourself or others or both?) - both; I've been growing mine out for three years now, and it's finally getting to that stage where I can actually do really cool things with it. I have a friend at work who lets be braid her hair too; her's is quite a bit longer than mine.

Oww - Stand for Online Writing Workshop. it's a critiquing group for writers of science fiction, fantasy and horror. url: sff.onlinewritingworkshop.com. Not for the faint of heart, people on there will tell you what they actually think.

Shamanism - my spirituality. and earth religion, differentiated from wicca in that shamanists do not worship or believe in gods per se, but spirits, and the spirits are manifest in all things. Ancestor worship also important.

Social Psychology - being mildly autistic, I am fascinated by why people do things and how they interact. What I'd love to know is, if they were to perform all these social experiments on autistic people, how different would we be, and in what respects?

Natural hair care - haven't shampooed my hair in over two months. I use just burt's bees conditioner, and a little bit of Jojoba oil after towel drying my hair. My hair's never been so healthy.

Painting - I paint in oils, though I haven't had so much time for it lately. I started with watercolour, but the medium is so unforgiving for my perfectionism.

Flamenco - to dance flamenco is like meditation. You have to concentrate so much, it's like a mantra - a mantra is something meaningless to help you clear your mind. When dancing flamenco, you can't think of anything else.

I feel like I should tell you that I wrote you anonymously on the last journal entry you had about being able to write for nanowrimo. It's Chris Casey from the OWW. I was at the library today, and read something by Elizabeth Bear, and liked the style. I've forgotten the name of it, sorry. Well, I wish you could help, and thanks for the offer of helping, and now I've identified my anonymous self, and you have another journal entry. I hope I can continue to visit your website here, and check out what's going on in your life.

ah. It's ok, if I was worried about strangers seeing my stuff, I can friends lock it.

Elizabeth bear wrote hammered and scardown, those might be the ones you're talking about, but I know she's got a new one out that's more fantasy type.

I'm glad I didn't go into more detail in my response to your last reply, because it would have been a suggestion to become a member of the OWW and I'll critique whatever you've written on there, since there's really no way of giving meaningful advice on something like that without reading it. But anyway, when you get to posting it on the OWW, I'll definitely look at it when nano's over.

Adversity and Triumph

The only means to greatness is through a triumphant conclusion over life's adversities. Granted, it's hard to appreciate adversity when you're going through it, but after you've survived, it's easier to respect what you've gone through. After awhile, and after some living, i've even begun to enjoy such things and who they've made me today.
I've even begun to look forward to these things - like looking ahead to the next challenge.

Civil Rights

I have so many reasons why this is one of my interests.

First off, the essential rights and freedoms that seperate us from the animals over there in China. It's not the reason we're "better," but it's the reason we live happier, more fulfilling lives than people suffering under oppression.

Secondarily, the stories that come from these struggles. Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, et cetera. Great, life affirming stories about regular people doing extraordinary things and changing the world forever. I eat that shit up.

Eyes

Home of my favourite cliche - windows to the soul.
Except I don't believe in the soul. Also, the eye is awesome. Such an intricate device developed over millions upon millions of years of slight genetic mutations. All by "random" chance. All equally improbable. And the thing's damn near perfect. Sure, I want my X-Ray vision and I wanna shoot laser beams like Superman, but I'll take what I've got over what my nearest ancestor had anyday.
Seriously, though! How awesome is that?

Pharmaceuticals

Back when I made this journal in ... 2001 or so, it was my OMGwitty way of saying drugs, but now my opinion on drugs has changed considerably. I'm on the bleeding edge of being anti-drug, at least here in B.C. Too many murders here over the distribution of a drug like weed, let alone meth, E, K, etc. It really is getting ridiculous. Although, I do understand the necessity of medicinal pharmaceuticals.

serial-killers

The same reason I like vampires and Grendel and other horrors from literature, except that these monsters exist and stalk our reality. They're fascinating in a morbid sort of sense, and I think that if you want to understand the world we live in (and I do) then you shouldn't overlook these horrid curiosities. They're really the lowest of the low when it comes to the human food chain, and despite what many of them think, it's because they've made it that way for themselves.

Ugliness

Ugliness is memorable. It's the detail that goes into it. I don't mean just visual ugliness, either. I mean emotional and intellectual ugliness, vanity, and contemptuous behaviour. It's an interest of mine because of how memorable it is, and how it should be a focus of personal study. It's the writer in me, I guess, that enjoys such things, even if they are subjective as hell.

I have no idea if I articulated that point correctly.

Women

Maybe it's a sexual orientation thing, but I do definitely find women inherently more fascinating than men. I like how the women in my life keep me guessing. That's kind of narrow, though. Yet, i've long since given up on generalized stuff to say about women, so narrow will have to do.

Too many murders here over the distribution of a drug like weed, let alone meth, E, K, etc. Except, that's because of anti-drug laws. No one murders over alcohol or tobacco, because they're perfectly legal, regulated, drugs. Anything that's pushed out of the legal market and into a black market can, especially if significant profit is involved, result in such violence. The same thing happened in the 1920's when the US prohibited alcohol, for example.

I have absolutely no issues towards legalizing weed. Until it's not legal, people are going to continue to kill over it.

Sorry, I couldn't get a hold of you when you were in winnipeg, I was out of town at a party anyway just about all weekend. I was dissappointed we didn't have the chance to get together.

anyway, you don't have that many interests listed (I know, neither do I) but here:

anti-activism
buddhism
eastern roman empire
hinduism
random acts of spontaneity
the viking age
zombie defense

anti-activism:
Causes annoy the hell out of me. from tree hugging hippies, to anti-abortion wack-jobs. Most people who are 'activists' do not take the time to fully understand their cause and the bigger picture. ESPECIALLY students! We have a student levy funded activism group here at SFU, I made sure to get my money back. There is no way I am funding their causes when I do not agree with most of them. Since the bulk of their causes are political in nature, I find it distasteful that they get an automatic levy in the student fees.
A case in point: the Canadian Federation of Students is spearheading a campaign here called 'We Ride' about public transit and the lack of decent service. I have several problems here: 1) the majority of students bitch about the packed buses and such when they are ALL trying to get to class at the last minute, making them late; or when they are trying to run off the hill as soon as class ends. The fact is that the majority of their problems can be alleviated by leaving earlier/later, or by using an alternate route. Instead they bitch for more buses from an already stretched thin transit system. 2) The CFS suddenly appears with this pandering campaign right when the Simon Fraser Student Society is moving to de-federate. Would they care if the SFSS was not doing so? I have never seen so much CFS crap around any city until now. Do people really think that the CFS gives a damn out anything but PR?

buddhism:
My cosmological wordview is basically Buddhist in origin, and it is a fascinating subject.

eastern roman empire:
I have been taking a lot of courses on the Byzantine empire over the past year and a half. It is a really interesting topic, and one that has not been a focused on as the west during the middle ages. The amount of intrigue is crazy!

hinduism:
You can't fully understand Buddhism without understanding it's shared history with Hinduism.

random acts of spontaneity:
My life is an odd dichotomy of order and disorder. I like planning ahead, but most of what I do is spontaneous. Such as my trip to Winnipeg. I was on my way back from the Bank when I just suddenly decided to fly out to winnipeg for the weekend. I had my tickets purchased within the hour. and it was AWESOME.

the viking age: Always been an interesting thing to study, but really hit home since I found out just how many of my family lines comes from Scandinavia. The Viking age had such an enormous impact on Europe that it is hard to ignore them. The Byzantines even had a regiment of Scandinavians in the imperial guard.

zombie defense: Failure = end of humanity. Organize before they rise!
