There are times, and this has happened before, where reading a really good book reminds me of what I really wanted to write about in the first place and I realize I need to do a complete overhaul of a story. Like, eliminating-an-entire-nation style overhaul. Because what I really wanted to write was civil war and revolution, not a war about an occupying force. The occupation came about because it was the first thing I thought of when I was coming up with a conflict, and since everything built on that conflict, it's a hard thing to realize I wanted to change.
That said, it's surprising how little it changes the plot; even simplifies certain things and makes some things more plausible.
